Menopause: Science and the Sacred

What do we mean when we talk about taking a “scientific and sacred” approach to menopause? Read on!!

Menopause has long been viewed through both sacred and scientific lenses. In many cultures, this transition is seen as a rite of passage, signifying wisdom, freedom, and a new phase of life. Some traditions celebrate menopause as a time when women become elders. This sacred perspective often emphasizes the spiritual and emotional growth that can accompany the physical changes of menopause (ALCHEMY!).

We have noticed that our current society doesn’t always do a great job framing menopause in this manner and our hope is that Maven Mindset will provide a container around exploring what is sacred around this transitional period.

From a scientific standpoint, menopause is characterized by a decline in reproductive hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone (often called a period of hormonal chaos). The process is accompanied by various physical symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and alterations in bone density and cardiovascular health. There are estrogen receptors IN EVERY ORGAN OF THE BODY!! So it makes sense that from a scientific standpoint many women experience a wide range of symptoms related to menopause. This knowledge is power!

The intersection of the sacred and scientific aspects of menopause offers a holistic approach to understanding and managing this life transition. While modern medicine provides treatments for symptom relief and health maintenance, the sacred approach looks at meaning and an awareness around our narrative. This integrated perspective encourages women to embrace menopause as both a physiological event and a transformative life stage.

When we first started dreaming up Maven Mindset, it was agreed that any offering we put forth would need to involve both the sacred and the science.
